The lionfish is beautiful. No question. But they are an invasive species in the Caribbean and spreading like crazy. Ten years ago there were almost none on these reefs. Now they are common. Of course the worry is that they will out-compete other species. There is a bounty on them throughout the Caribbean. But on Bonaire they've actually gotten pretty clever on trying to control them. The offer them on local menus. You could even get lionfish pizza at one restaurant. I guess the idea is that if folks take to them they might fish them out. We didn't try it but were told it was flaky white fish similar -- but smaller -- than Mahi Mahi. Worth a try. |
