My dive buddy, Brad Reynolds, peeks around a coral head at one of the many invasive lionfish at Crab Mountain reef. We saw six at this reef alone. That's a lot for a fish that isn't supposed to exist in the hemisphere. Although graceful and slow, they protect themselves with those beautiful, venomous dorsal fin rays. They are often found hanging out under reef overhangs, hunting smaller fish. When approached, rather than flee, they will turn their backside to a predator, ready to hit them with those sharp spines. |
