Spider Crab Up Close

We only did one night dive during our trip. We found this huge spider crab on Austin's reef. It was the first of several fascinating discoveries on the night reef.

This extreme close up gives an idea of the unusual adaptations that occur on the reef. I suppose this must be attractive to the opposite sex in a crab's world. Seemed a little spooky to me.

Among the most spectacular of "firsts" for me on this trip occurred while William and I were off-gassing at the safety line during this dive. As we waited our compulsory three minutes at 15 feet, we doused our lights to avoid attracting sea wasps in the water column. As our eyes adjusted to the light, the sea around and below us came alive like the Vegas strip with bio-luminescence!

It was dazzling. We found we could even excite the green fireworks by making great sweeps of our hands through the water, each stroke igniting a trailing light show at our fingertips.
