Squid Up Close And Very Personal

Even after diving for more than 25 years in some amazing locations, I continue to be surprised and rewarded with something new on almost every dive, certainly every trip.

This close-up of a squid in mid-water wasn't so unusual. Beautiful, but not unusual.

However it was among many occasionally-mating squid we saw at Joy's Joy reef. It was interesting to watch a pair approach one another, the tentacles of one flailing wildly and turning white as it mounted the other.

Unfortunately, they were apparently bashful about sex in front of strangers because, while they allowed our close approach when swimming, they would uncouple and dart away if we made any motion toward them during mating.

Still, it was another cool surprise after many years of amazing ocean surprises.
