From the massive grace of the five-foot nurse shark to the delicate but relentless circular tango of this tiny spotted drum, these reefs offer many diverse surprises. This little guy was probably not more than an inch-and-a-half long, tirelessly and characteristically circling its little crevice on the wall at Ringer's Wall reef. Spotted drum were pretty common on the upper reefs of Little Cayman but difficult to photograph because they were invariably under an overhang or in a hole that made maneuvering my bulky camera and lights a clumsy effort. Thankfully, this one was patient with my dorky approaches and hung out long enough for me to make a picture. Still, this image is enlarged considerably from the original because I just couldn't get close enough to fill the frame. Of course, it might have helped if I had been rigged for macro on this dive, instead of wide angle. |
