Spotted Trunkfish

Among the things that always amaze and confound me about sea creatures are the curious physical adaptations evolution has conferred.

This funky-looking spotted trunkfish at Man ’O War Shoals reef had me wondering what could be the purpose of both its shape and color patterns. Its shape certainly does not expedite capturing prey or avoiding predators, as it is a relatively slow swimmer. But this species and other boxfish seems to thrive.
