This elusive mass of enamored snapper was a sign that we were in the right place to see whale sharks. I shot down on this spawning group from about 120 feet deep. I'm guessing they were another 20 feet or so below me. The idea is that the whale sharks are attracted to the free meal offered by tens of thousands of spawning snapper during the full moon phases of April, May and June each year. If you can find the snapper, there's every chance that the filter-feeding sharks will be nearby. But we were not so lucky. Still, seeing the amazing site of so many fish in one writhing group was pretty impressive, even as they were obscured by the lack of light at this depth. |
